;Name :Pelargonium graveolens ;Family :Gerania...

Geranium essential oil is actually from the plant Pelargonium (Pelargonium graveolens.) Geraniums are in fact, a different plant altogether, commonly referred to as Cranesbill. Both Geraniums and Pelargoniums were once classified in the same genus “Geranium” but were later separated, although the geranium name stuck and is still in common use today.

Geraniums are popular attractive plants, which are native to South Africa and were introduced to Europe in the 17th century.

The oil is extracted from the leaves by steam distillation. It has a wonderful heavy but sweet scent and is similar to the more expensive Rose, although some varieties can have a lemony aroma. It is classified as a middle note oil.

Geranium is often used in cosmetics and can be used with the much more expensive Rose oil to make it go further.

It is an uplifting oil and has a great balancing effect on the mind. It soothes emotions as it helps to relieve feelings of stress, depression and anxiety. It is an adrenal cortex stimulant, so has a balancing effect on the hormone system and can be really good to help with pre-menstrual tension and menopausal imbalances.

Its properties also extend to the skin. It can create balance between oily and dry skin. It also stimulates the lymphatic system, so can be useful for massage to help with fluid retention.
