Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is a cultivated sub tropical tree around 10 meters high with glossy leaves, which produces white flowers and large yellow-orange fruit.

It is native to the West Indies and tropical Asia, but is cultivated around the world, including Brazil and Israel, although Florida and California in the US is where most of the oil is produced.

Grapefruit essential oil is obtained by cold-pressing the fresh peel of the fruit. It is classified as a top note oil.

It has a characteristic bitter, sharp citrus scent, which is very recognisable.

Grapefruit is a versatile oil with many uses:

For the Mind:

  • It is very uplifting and stimulates and refreshes tired minds.

For the Body:

  • It has anti oxidant properties so helpful to boost immunity, good to use when you have a cold, for example.
  • Grapefruit has diuretic properties, so is helpful in the removal of excess water in the body.
  • It stimulates the lymphatic system to help remove toxins from the body, helping with cellulite, oedema and arthritis.
  • It stimulates the digestive system.
  • Can be good for treating cramp due to its stimulating action.
  • Great for skin care, particularly oily, congested and acne prone skin. It also has a toning effect on the skin.

Some cautions to bear in mind when using Grapefruit oil:

As with all essential oils, I recommend that you don’t use them when pregnant without consulting a qualified practitioner.

Grapefruit should not be applied directly to the skin as it will cause irritation.

It can also make the skin photosensitive, so should not be used before going in the sun, to be sure of no adverse affects.
